Flywheel Energy Storage Systems store kinetic energy by the use of a spinning mass to store and regenerate power. Flywheel UPS systems are more environmentally friendly than a typical UPS because they do not use batteries and they are also 15 times more reliable than a UPS with a single battery bank.

Double Conversion / On-line: Alternating current is converted to direct current by the rectifier.  The direct current is used to charge the battery reserve and to supply the inverter.  The inverter converts the direct current back to alternating current.  In the event of a failure of the aforementioned components, the static bypass switch transfers utility power to the critical load without interruption.  Noise and spike suppression are provided in the bypass mode.  This technology has the highest reliability, due to the static switch.  Mean-time-between-failure to the load is 5 - 7 times higher than with any other technology.  Additionally, due to the sinewave being regenerated, this technology provides the purest output waveform.  Since the waveform is regenerated, electrical noise, transients, frequency deviations and voltage anomalies are completely eliminated.

Line Interactive:  This type of technology works by the voltage of the AC power being regulated by either a tap switching or ferroresonant transformer.  Surge suppression is accomplished by small metal oxide varistors.  If the input voltage deviate outside an acceptable level, the load is switched to the inverter.  When power returns to acceptable limits, power is switched back from the inverter to the utility.  In the event of a failure of the system, the load goes down as it is impossible to incorporate a static switch with this technology, due to the phase shift through the regulating transformer.  This type of technology is slightly more efficient than the double conversion units.

Standby Power Systems: This type of technology is the least expensive.  It allows raw utility power to pass directly to the load.  Surge suppression is accomplished by small metal oxide varistors.  If the input voltages deviates outside an acceptable window, the load is switched to the inverter.  When power returns to acceptable limits, power is switched back from the inverter to the utility.  In the event of a failure of the system, the load goes down.
